1. INTRODUCTION
Language is the mode of
communication, and without language it is not possible to survive in any
society. Different groups of people speak different languages conferring to
their needs, and these languages or articulated in specific terrestrial
boundaries, and share the same ethos. Every language has two forms which are
known as articulated and inscribed, and both systems are used bestowing to the
requirements of framework, but there are different languages which are spoken
as worldwide languages, and English is one of them. English is an international
language, which is being extensively used all over the entire world. Although
it is the indorsed language of United Nations, yet it has been embraced by
almost every country as a primary source of information as well as
communication. It has just come to pass because it is the most corporate
foreign language in the world. It is used for different purposes, in different
pitches of life, and different regions of the world. For instance, the two people who belong to
two poles apart countries, they frequently try to use English as a mutual
language for communication. Besides this, we call world as a global village and
in order to endure update about world we need to learn English because English
is the most common genre of communication during the course of the whole world.
English language has the most intricate status in the world, and for many
people it is learnt as their first language, for some as their educational, and
for few as an occupational language. It is being acknowledged as world’s lingua franca. English is a third most
universally speaking language, and it
is said that about 380 million people all over the world use English as their
first language, in different countries like Great Britain, Canada, the United
States and Australia and about 600 million people use it as a ‘second language’
together with the other languages like India, Nigeria and many other countries
and almost one billion people are said to be learning it as their foreign
language. It is just because in most parts of the world English is measured as
the source of trade and industry development and forthcoming source.
Every language which is
spoken in any part of the world, grips different dialects. English language,
like other languages, has many dialects which are renowned worldwide. These
dialects are identified as American English, British English, Canadian English,
Australian English, New Zealand English, South African English, Irish English
and Indian English. United States containing over 300 million inhabitants, is
considered home to more innate speakers. As we all know, English language is
instigated in British and It is entitled as the first home to English. This
dialect is the most prestigious dialect that is being taught to learners as a
standard dialect, but now a days American English has also been adopted and
specified the prestige of standard language. These are the most important and
well recognized dialects wide-reaching. Although American dialect is used by
more people in the world and British has less speakers yet British English has
its own esteem, and own repute surrounded by the speakers worldwide.
The English language has
developed more responsiveness throughout the whole world than any other
language. In the educational institutions of virtually every country, English
is taught as a second or foreign language. Besides this, it is also used as a
most joint occupational language. People from different areas, when encounter
with one another for business, or trade purposes they use English as their
method of communication, and act together with one another to accomplish their
necessity of the language. In Pakistan, Urdu is the domestic language of the
country and it is also the illustrative of Pakistani people at international
level. Urdu was professed as the one and only national language of Pakistan
after one year of independence, and the people of initial time of Pakistan were
more tending towards learning the Urdu language. Now a days, although Urdu is
the state language yet Pakistani youth is more persuaded towards learning
English language, because they know the prominence of the English language.
They recognize, in order to survive in the society and in international
community, they have to absorb English. And to remain modernize about world
news, they also need to learn the English language because most of the media
sources are available in the English language. Now a days, we need to remain
update about the frugality, political affairs, values and many other traits which
play an important and praiseworthy part in the life of common folks.
In this aspect media
plays an imperative role and affects the elocution of the youth. Although there
is print media and electronic media, but here we are more concerned about the
electronic media i.e. news channels, movies, music, cartoons, animated movies
etc. There are further two types of media available: one is the representative
of American English dialect and other speaks British English.
1.1: Statement of Problem
As we know and have by
this time deliberated that in order to endure update about the world, we have
to mug up the English language, because most of the news about world, and
different aspects of life are stretched to us through the most common mode of
communication; the English language. In Pakistan, the students are responsive
to the significance of the English language, and they are more tending towards
learning the English language. They face many of the problems while learning
the English language. Pronunciation plays the prominent part in learning any
language, and in order to learn any language, it is necessary evil to improve
the pronunciation of the target language. In Pakistani context, student face
the problem of pronunciation and remain incapable to improve their
pronunciation, to meet the standard level. The problem to be reconnoitered in
this research is the effect of media on youth’s pronunciation of English, and
to elucidate that to what extent youth’s pronunciation is being affected by the
media. Besides this, the research will try to see the sights through which the
students will take help to improve their pronunciation, and this will also
empower them to meet, to the needs of the standard pronunciation.
1.2: Objectives of the Study

1.4: Significance of the Study
As we call English as lingua franca and well aware of its
importance as communicative and social language in present era. This study will
provide the information to youth that how does media affect their language. For
all the learners it will be informative to know the benefits of the English
media, and they would also get the information, and awareness about the media
is the better way to develop better language skills. This study will be proved
awareness for them to use the proper channels of media in order to improve
their pronunciation. Furthermore, when they will use the proper media channels,
it will help them realizing their pronunciation mistakes, and to correct them
in order to stand in the international community. This will also help
graduation level students in adopting the proper media sources to get the
things done.
1.5: Delimitation
This research will be
delimited to the Pakistani context, the effectiveness of media on the
pronunciation of youth at graduation level. The English movies, songs and news
channels will be taken to conduct and analyze the interviews. It will be further
delimited to The Reader Group of Colleges, Mandi Bahauddin, twenty students
from two sections of B.A at The Reader Group of Colleges, Mandi Bahauddin,
Pakistan.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
According to
Oyeyemi, Abioye, & Daniel (2016) interactive multimedia technology is among
the major, and the best ways to improve the performance of the pupils in their
use of English language, and it helps in achieving educational effectiveness.
Besides this, multimedia technology has created the possibilities for larning
the impressive, effective and attractive
teaching skills, and get the things done in a better and most
appropriate way. This research is based on asumption, and it has proved that
multimedia technology is and effect and the bset tool for the educators, to use
it for the better learning and understanding for the stuedents. It has made the
life of the teachers and pupils, easier, better and effortless. Students can
use the multimedia technology to get their work done easily, and teachers can
use these tools to enhance the larning of the stuedents, in an easier and
better way. Technology helps the students, in understanding, comprehending,
practicing and producing the language, in a better and an impressive way.
Multimedia attracts, motivates and gets the attention of the learners, and
helps them in developing the better understanding of the subject. Besides this,
it arises the curiosity in learners and creates a tension for the fututre
incidents.
According to
Zainnuri (2014) the softwear Tell Me More is among the best sources, and a
milestone to enhance the pronunciation of the student of the English language.
After the struggle of complete research, the researcher has pointed out some
major facts about Tell Me More that it contains effective, helpful and some extra
ordinary results than RS multimedia, or other simple methods, in pronunciation
teaching. Besides this, they have also pointed out that confidence have great
impact, and a vital role in the teaching of pronunciation. High confidence
pupils have a better understanding and effective abilities of enhancing the
pronunciation and the low confidence students does not hae ample abilities in
getting the things done quickly. The low confidence students need more
guidance, extra attention and concentration than high confidence pupils. Tell
Me More, is the better way than the RS media to enhance, and increase the
abilities of pupils in improving their
pronunciation. Pronunciation activities, with full confidence during teaching
and learning process, are among the best sources to enhance pronunciation in a
better and afster way.
According to
Xodabande (2017) the English language, as a most common medium of
communication, has an extraordinary and invaluable importance in the present
era. He argues that pronunciation of the English language as EFL, is an
important and most inconvient task at the same time. He exclaims that there are
two types of English teacher; one who love to teach English, and the other who
have detestive attitude towards teaching it. He conducts the research to teach
the Iranian stduents, the pronunciation of some words which they mispronounce
in their daily routine, and the technologies--which are growing and increasing
rapidly-- help him in the conduction of research. He comes up with different
results, after the conduction of research. He includes that as it not possible
for the teachers, to teach correct pronunciation in the class, they should
utilize the technologies, and by providing different social media sources, make
their students learn the most accurate and pure form of pronunciation. In this
regard, pictures, videos, movies and music are the best ways, to make the
students able, to improve their pronunciation. He comes up with results, the
technology is the best ingrediant, to make the students able and efficient in
the enhancement of their pronunciation.
Navrátilová
(2013), in his research carries the opinion about the influence of TV and radio that these are the most
influential tools, and his carried out research has the results that these
tools help a lot in learning any language. He conducted the research and came
up with the results that TV and radio help the students a lot in learning
English as a second language. While there was one student, who was observed, he
watch the British series and likes a British singer, he was found distinguish
among all other students. Because he had British accent while all the other
students spoke American English language.
This paper hypothesizes
that the senior English majors at Hebron University have problems in the
English pronunciation and phonetics; therefore, using English movies and songs
in instruction has the ability to solve such problems and enhance the English
majors' pronunciation. The results of the survey and the experiment that have
been carried out support what was hypothesized, and the following conclusions
prove the validity of the proposed hypotheses. (Al-Muhtaseb, 2012)
Based on the conclusion
above, it can be implied that cartoon films can be used in pronunciation
teaching learning process. Cartoon films are an effective way to improve
students’ pronunciation ability. Cartoon films are also able to increase the
students’ confidence significantly. (Pratiwi, 2010)
3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Given method
has been followed by the researcher.
3.1: Research Type
The research is primarily qualitative in nature
but the result can be in quantified forms, and it is based on interviews.
3.2: Theoretical Framework:
The term “Interlanguage”,
for the first and foremost, was coined and used in the theory of interlanguage.
The idea was presented by Larry Salinkeer, in 1972, having certain
characteristics which have been try to elaborate below:
The first
milestone fact is when a learner tries to grasp over the second or target
language, there always is a possibility of interlanguage having specific
properties and rules L1. This theory, I find, applicable to my work, as I am
working on the students who carry the interlanguage.
At the second
place, this theory elaborates that there are different factors in students’
committing errors. Likewise, the use of borrowed words from the L1 or the
mother tongue. This theory can be applied to my work, as I find that many words
which hold the identity of mother tongue, are get mixed up, and students, under
the influence of mother tongue, always mispronounce them. The mother tongue,
most of the time, is the basic reason for the incorrect pronunciation of
different words. Then there is another reason of making pronunciation;
unawareness about the target language and its rules. Students, in most cases,
remain unaware about the exact pronunciation of different words at their school
level, and later in college, they pronounce the words incorrectly and
inappropriately. Here I have tried to explore that how students try to improve
their pronunciation by adopting different English media channels.
3.3: Population
The study has been held at The Reader Group of Colleges, Mandi
Bahauddin, Punjab, Pakistan.
3.4: Sample
Structured interviews has been taken into practice; twenty
participants have been selected as a sample from B.A to participate in this
study. Participants have been divided into two groups and each group has ten
participants. The stratified sampling technique has been used, and by using
this technique the groups have been arranged. Both the groups have some common
properties. Only those students have been selected which are involved in
watching and having the especial interest of media, and they are using media to
enhance their English language. The students, especially trying to improve
their pronunciation, have been especially chosen to take interviews.
3.5: Tools
The following tool has been used to collect data.
1.
Recorded Interviews
3.6: Research Process
The research of any kind, a try to explore or evaluate anything,
is not only the work of collecting or analyzing data, rather in research the
hidden abilities of the researcher proved to be the best weapon. In this
regard, I have tried to perform the best I can. My research has been taken
place in few different process, the processes have been discussed in detail
below.
Firstly,
selection of topic is the most important, and a milestone in conducting any
research. I have selected the topic by keeping in view the problems our
generation which they face in while learning English as a second language. The
pronunciation is the most dominant and prominent part of any language, and if
you change the pronunciation from one word to another, it gives totally different
meaning. So in order to grasp the pronunciation of the English of language, we
have to adopt some ways. In this research, I have tried to explore that to what
extent the English media can help the students in enhancing their pronunciation
and better opportunities.
Secondly,
after the selection of topic, the related literature also proved to be the step
for further planning for research. The related literature helps the researcher
to find the best ways to conduct, and manage the research. I have tried to find
and thoroughly read the related literature to my work. I have read it by
keeping in view that how they have conducted and manage their researches. In
this regard, the related literature has been proved as the best tool for me, to
work upon my own research, and to present it in a well formed way.
Thirdly,
selection of sample, as a soul of research, is the most important part. After
the selection of topic and finding the related literature I have tried to find
that which areas is needed to work on, and I have selected the sample from the
area by using the stratified sampling technique. The sample has been selected
for being the homogeneous. They are homogeneous on the following grounds;
i.
They belong to the same area.
ii.
They have the same schooling background.
iii.
They have the same social background.
iv.
All of them are second language learners of the English language.
v.
They use the English media to improve their English language.
Fourthly, the
application of the research tool in the collection of data for research is also
an important step. By keeping in view, the nature of my research I have used
the recorded interviews, to collect data for my research. The research has been
held in the form of recorded interviews, and the structured interviews have
been used to collect data from the sample. In the collection of data, they
participants have been given the freedom to say and show their opinions towards
the questions, so the results would not get biased. I have collected data from my
sample by asking them different question and the analysis of that data is under
the next heading.
4. DATA ANALYSIS
Data has been collected through structured interviews from the
students of B.A. at the Reader Group of Colleges, Mandi Bahauddin.
In the
question one, which is only about the introduction of the participants, they
have given the introduction. All the data, I have collected, is from the
students of B.A, the Reader Group of Colleges, Mandi Bahauddin.
The question
two is about the duration of the participants of watching the media. When we
talk about their average duration most of the students watch the English media
at the daily routine. They are more inclined towards watching the English media
in their daily routine. They prefer watching the English media instead of
spending time on other activities. Most of them say that they watch the English
media to work upon their language abilities, facial expression and the style of
uttering different words. Some of them, able to watch the English media, at
every weekend. The great love and interest have been seen in the students of
B.A for watching the English media, in order to improve their language skills.
In the answer
of question third, more than 85% students have said that they watch the English
media to improve their pronunciation and enhance the speaking abilities. While
taking their interviews, it has been keenly observed, the students who have
been watching the English media, have great speaking abilities than those who
do not watch the English media. One can find a far more difference in
confidence level of the students who watch the English media than those who do
not watch. The students were quite confident than the common students, and they
have been seen more attracted towards speaking the language. Besides this,
their pronunciation is far better than the others.
Question four
has been answered differently and in a different way. All the students have
been watching the English media for different times. If we take an average of
time, most of the students have been watching the English media from more than
2 years. Every person has a different and an individual experience of watching
the English media. They have almost the same opinion that English media is the
most important and soul of learning and enhancing the speaking skills and
establishing the language in a far better way. All the participants were quite
happy and full of zeal, in explaining their experience.
In question
five, the students almost carry the same opinion. “Language is the body and the
pronunciation of the language is the soul of it”. “Body cannot survive without
the soul.” Every participant have the same opinion about the pronunciation of
the language, and almost all of them have been watching the English media in
order to enhance their speaking skills and improve their pronunciation, and as
well as their facial expression by watching them. They consider pronunciation
of the language as the soul to the body. They believe that as body cannot
survive without the soul, language cannot be survive and retained in the mind
without accurate pronunciation. The soul of the matter is the pronunciation.
Question six
is the soul of the research, and it has been arranged to see the views of the
participants that how their experience has been during this period. To what
extent they think that the English media has helped them in improving their
pronunciation. Every participant has the same opinion. Each and every one of
them has said that during this period of time, they have been able to improve
their pronunciation. They think that the English media is the best tool to
enhance the pronunciation, and it is the best strategy to adopt, in the present
era, to learn the English in a better rather in the best way. The carried out
research has been successful in getting the positive results from the
participants, and it carries the important message that in order to improve the
speaking skills of English, everyone should watch the English media. Because it
is the best tool.
In question
seven, the students carry a common opinion that they want to improve English
language’s pronunciation just to get the better place in the society and to be
the better speaker. “If you speak accurate and correct English, you have been
regarded as the educated person and your opinion is always valued.” “It is the
official language of Pakistan, and carries the same important as the other
languages.”
They want to
improve their English language because they know that the English language has
been spoken in the whole world, and more than 90% of people speak it as their
second or foreign language. They believe that they will be able to secure a
better place in the society and better jobs if they have better speaking
abilities.
Answer of
question eight carries almost the same opinion that all these participants, who
are involved in watching the English media, have no different source in enhancing
their pronunciation. More than 90% participants among all the participants just
rely on the English media to improve their pronunciation. They do not use any
other sources to improve their pronunciation skills rather they just watch the
English media regularly in order to improve their pronunciation, and a clear
distinction can be created by observing their speaking skills.
Question nine
is about the genre among all the genres of the English media. Most of them
watch movies, because movies carry the story, action and a specific sequence
which create a curiosity among the students and they believe that all those
genres which carry the curiosity, have a special effect on learning and they
are not much time taking. Because if a person has special interest for
something, this interest becomes the base of learning the things in a better
way. Some of them watch news because they have interest for politics and other
news about world, and they carry the opinion that if you have interest for
something it becomes easier for you to learn the things easily. They just watch
the English media to improve their language skills. Some of them also watch the
cartoons, and their language has not been improved yet. They believe that if
you see people speaking, it becomes easier for you to grasp the things in a
better way.
While
answering to the question ten they have explained the reasons that why do they
like these genres and watch them. The participants who watch the English movies
say that the movies have a story, suspense, sequence of incidents and besides
all this they create a curiosity among the viewers which enable them to see it
by paying more attention. Besides this, they also say, by watching the
characters speaking the English language and looking at their action that how
they pronounce the words, make ones able to speak the words and articulate them
in a better way. Those who watch the news, have been seen, carrying the
especial interest in politics and world news. It makes them enable to learn and
grasp the things easily. The cartoon viewers have especial interest in watching
the cartoons and animated movies. It is very obvious, after watching the
participants speaking and taking their interviews that interest makes it easy
to learn the things and retain them.
In the explanation
of question eleven every as every person has different duration of watching the
English media and different mind to retain the things but with the help of
rough average it can be said that in the duration of 2 years the 75 to 80%
percent of the language can be easily understood according to the participants.
It is very obvious that learning anything is very easy with the help of the
English media. It makes a person better speaker than those who do not watch the
English media. A very average kind of student can also easily learn and
understand the language of the English media within the duration of 2 years but
the interest is the key word to make it possible.
In the answer
of question twelve the students have been seen saying that the English media
has enable them in uttering the words correctly and pronounce them
appropriately. They believe that it is fun to watch the English media and learn
the language at the same time. They say that by watching them speaking, and
repeating after them has made them worthy to be considered among the good
language speakers and they have been given the preference now days. Besides
this, the participants have the opinion that the English media has helped them
in learning the facial expression while speaking the English language. This
also has made them enable of speaking confidently in the front of others. Now,
after watching the English media, they feel more confidential and feel no
hesitation while speaking to anybody. To cut the long story short, they say
that the English media helps the learners in learning the language in a better
and easier way and makes you confident.
To the answer
to question thirteen, all of them have seen saying, they suggest their friends
and family members to watch the English media. They suggest because they have
experienced and get most benefits and they also want their friends and family
members to watch the English media. They say that in order to survive in this
global village, one has to learn the English language and the English media is
the best source to learn the English and stand in the international community
of the people who are considered as educated and well mannered.
The question
fourteen has been answered as, the pronunciation is the soul of any language
and as the world is a global village and the English language is the soul
language of this village. So in order to get a better place in this village,
one has to equip oneself with this language. And in this regard, pronunciation
is the most important factor. “If you change the pronunciation, the meaning
also gets changed. For example; in Arabic there is a word “QALAB” if you stress
it, it means “Heart” and if you do not stress it, it becomes “Dog”. So it is
very obvious that pronunciation plays a vital role.
Every
participant in the answer of question fifteen, carries the same opinion. They
say that firstly, English is the official language, and the language which is used
in the documents of Pakistan. So it is a necessary evil to learn if you want to
survive in Pakistan. In any filed, in Pakistan you have to use this language.
If you want to get admission, you have to use it. If you want to be appointed
somewhere on any job, you must have a vast knowledge of the language. And even
many of us English phobia, if you cannot speak English you are considered as
uneducated. So you have to learn it. Besides this, the participants believe
that if they go to study abroad, it will make easier for them to get admission
there and get better opportunities there. Thus, it will help them in Pakistan
and in abroad for further studying or getting any diploma or job there
somewhere.
5. CONCLUSION
On the basis of data analysis the research carries the following
results.
The English
media is the best tool to improve the pronunciation and it helps the students a
lot in improving their pronunciation and speaking skills. But the English media
is not the only thing which can help anyone to improve the speaking abilities.
All the participants have the same opinion about it that without interest one
cannot learn anything. If you are watching the English media and have the
especial interest for the genre you are involve in, it makes the things easy
for you to grasp and it also make you able to learn the things easily.
